Schwinn Exercise Bike: Schwinn Airdyne Upright Exercise Bike

Schwinn Exercise Bike: Schwinn Airdyne Upright Exercise Bike

5-Star Customer Review

"The Schwinn Airdyne Upright is a classic - virtually unchanged for at least 20 years (I used them at Columbia University's gym back in college in the early 80s in essentially their current form). The lack of evolution speaks to their excellent functionality. The Airdyne differs from most exercise bikes in having a large air-resistance flywheel instead of a smaller heavier flywheel with mechanical friction or an electric magnetic resistance flywheel that needs power and the electronics head to operate it. The advantages are fourfold: 1) the larger flywheel is exceptionally smooth, 2) the air resistance is naturally graduated (i.e. the faster you pedal, the greater the wind resistance and the harder it gets to pedal). This resistance approach means you organically find your level by pacing - with no need to ever set resistance manually. 3) The air resistance flywheel kicks up wind that cools you as you work out. 4) Mechanical resistance devices tend to wear out first - becoming bumpy or uneven; magnetic resistance units become unusable if the electronics head stops working. The air resistance scheme is simpler and is built with tremendous durability. I've owned my Airdyne for 12 years and it has been perfectly reliable the whole time - and it has been moved 3 times and has taken a real beating. The Airdyne's handles are linked to the pedals, encouraging you to work out your arms at the same time. The upper body workout gets most of the arm and a good involvement of the chest and shoulders too. The unit is battleship built of stamped and welded steel - just like a Schwinn bike. The chain is enclosed for safety - and a safety lock lets you prevent things from moving when you move the unit (it moves on small integrated wheels in front). You need those wheels because the Airdyne is big and heavy. This translates to excellent stability when in use.

Is the Airdyne the perfect workout machine? There are some drawbacks: The air flow is nice - but it's noisy too. This makes it hard to watch TV or work out with others in the room. The big wind can send papers flying. The upperbody workout can be distracting from the biking rhythm. I wish there were an alternate set of handlebars that didn't move for when you just want to bear down and spin. The handlebars only allow an overhanded and underhanded grip. I wish the handles curved up at the ends so you could hold them vertically like ski poles. This would result in a more natural arm motion. The big padded seat is comfortable as bikes go - but that's not saying much. Bike exercise has the disadvantage of not being weight bearing - but this is a quibble. My heart monitor confirms you can definitely get your cardio rate up on a bike. Did I mention this unit is big and heavy? The little wheels help - but moving this bike isn't a casual exercise. Finally, despite the clear efforts at safety, ther are still places where cat's tails and children's fingers can be pinched when in use(notably where the handlebars link to the pedals with long metal bars near the bottom of the unit).

If you like to use an exercise bike to work out, and don't mind some noise and wind, the Airdyne will give you a great workout - keep you cool - and last basically for ever.

Followup 10/08: The computer on mine stopped working recently after 14 years - but it doesn't matter to me (I seldom used it anyway). The computer displayed time, rpm, distance, an arbitrary "workout level". It didn't do heart rate so I tend to use a wrist mounted heart monitor which times the workout for my anyway. I could probably buy a replacement computer but I'm not going to bother. The fact is that this bike works fine without it. Try that with any newfangled bike. This bike is like the old Nikon F camera - which mentioned in the instructions that if you accidentally dropped it in seawater you should rinse it in fresh water and then dry it with the film door opened in a an oven set at lowest temperature for an hour! That's how they used to make gear!"

5-Star Review: Nice Bike - Built Well

Had it almost two weeks. Goes together in about an hour and fits in an incredibly small space. Seems very well constructed, no loose parts. Takes awhile to adjust everything as everything is adjustable. Seat is very comfortable, I purchased a different seat when I ordered the bike, but decided to use the seat that came with it.

Makes absolutely no noise at all when you're riding it. Shifting between levels is smooth and quiet, and the pedaling is very smooth and consistent all the way around. Heartbeat monitor on the handles work great, but trying to get my Polar band to talk to it has been a challenge as there is no documentation on how it connects.

Seems like if you start riding first, then activate the band, it works, but still trying to figure this out. The interface on the computer takes some getting used to. The documentation for the computer could be a little better, but overall, I am extremely happy with this bike. Great value for the money!

5-Star Review: Great Bike

I read a lot of reviews of other bikes so I was on the look out for problems. So far we have not run into any. The setup was very easy. Schwinn provided the parts laid out on a printed piece of cardboard and all the tools necessary to do the job. The assembly "manual" was a pictogram with few words but easy to understand. The entire setup took 45 minutes because I took my time and very methodically laid out each step. If I just jumped into it, it probably would have taken 20-30 minutes. A second pair of hands would have helped align things quicker.

One hint I will give you is to make sure you tighten the seat. I thought I had it tight and after riding it a few times, the seat started to swivel. As far as operation goes, we could not be more pleased. It is extremely quiet! In fact I have to almost strain to hear it. It has more whistles and bells than we use (we just jump on and ride for a specific duration). You can set up a "course" where it get progressively harder then easier.

My wife likes the fact that it shows the number of calories burned too. The only thing I do not like (but my wife does) is the over the shoe strap on the pedals. My shoes are too wide and it is difficult to get them in. If my wife did not like them I would remove them.

I wish Schwinn would make it easier to get them on and off. Overall this is an excellent bike and we are extremely pleased with it.

5 Star- Review: Outstanding Exercise Bicycle!
(for source, click here)

I did extensive research before I bought this bike. I've ridden it for about ten hours since assembly and am simply delighted with it. I am a good mechanic and assembled it by myself in about three hours. The assembly manual has little text, mostly illustrations; but they marginally suffice, more text would be very helpful.

The console electronic cable going the top of the front wheel hardware has connectors at both ends -- they must be connected to the proper connectors, they are not the same configuration and are not interchangeable. So beware, the bike parts I received had this cable reversed so I was unable to connect the connectors until I removed the cable and reversed its "to -- from" direction.

The text regarding the programming of a user is unsatisfactory, confusing, does not effective communicate to a reader.

When registering the bike, you must have its serial number, the serial number is located on the bottom of the front stabilizer, record it before you assemble the bike.

In sum, if you are looking for an outstanding recumbent exercise bike at a most reasonable price, I urge you to purchase this bike.

5-Star Review: This is the best thing I have bought for myself in a long time!!!!!

I have done the research for over a year now on recumbent bikes, and after much time I finally realized that the Schwinn 230 recumbent was the bike for me! So, I purchased the bike online and it was delivered in perfect condition from UPS, however I do recommend trying to be home the entire day that it is being delivered- if at all possible, as the bike is very heavy and the UPS driver will not want to carry it far, and will most likely just drop it on your driveway.... We were home, and he begged my husband to help him carry it off of the truck, so I can only imagine what would have happened if we were not home?

Now, my husband put the bike together very easily in about 30 minutes. He said that the directions were very well written and easy to understand :-) This bike is seriously WONDERFUL, and by far the BEST piece of exercise equipment that I have EVER bought!!! I have owned them all - a high end treadmill, elliptical walker, etc... But this bike is sooooo simple and effortless to you, that you will WANT to ride it every day!!! The thing that I LOVE MOST about this bike, and what makes me ride it EVERY day for 60 minutes, is how COMPLETELY QUIET it is.... I watch TV for about an hour a day, and I ride the bike while doing so, and the only thing you can ever hear is the TV, NOT the bike!!! Because of that, I could literally ride that bike for hours at a time if I wanted, as it is completely user friendly :-)

If you are looking to get in shape and want a machine that has GREAT programs, and is totally QUIET and easy to use, and you don't want to use it merely for a towel/clothes holder, than I would say BUY THIS BIKE!!

5-Star Review
I spent a couple weeks looking at bikes at different stores trying to figure out which one I wanted. I was stuck between three bikes: this one, another inexpensive bike at a chain retail store, and a bike at another store costing $100 more. After reading every online review I could find out online about all the bikes, I chose to take a risk and buy this one without trying it out. I am so happy I went with this bike.

Setting up the bike was easy. My husband took his time and set it up in 45 minutes. I am 5'5'' and was able to easily find a setting fit for me with another setting marked even lower if you may not be as tall. The size is very compact, which we had a hard time believing the width of the machine, but it is true. I have decent sized closets in my apartment (although not walk in), and this bike will even fit in the closet in case I don't want the bike out in the open. The frame is extremely strong (no wobbling on carpet and I am plus sized). Very simple and sturdy machine. I only use the computer for the tensions (which go from absolutely no tension to what feels like a more body building tension), chart distance and time, as well as heart rate. I even use it with a Wii game where I have to take my heart rate to chart my progress.

A big problem I read about is concerning the hard seat. I purchased the optional Schwinn padded seat (that is recommended by amazon). It helped some, but my seat still didn't feel the most comfortable so I laid a towel over the seat for a few days until my bottom got used to the seat and I was able to take it off.

Also, another think worth noting is that the peddles are comfortable enough where you can even ride it barefoot (which I've done before).
I am riding this 30 plus minutes a day going 17-19 mph while watching TV. The only thing I would hope Schwinn would improve on in the future is adding a water bottle holder.

I love the quality of this bike and would highly recommend it for someone who wants a workout while watching tv.

Schwinn Exercise Bike: Schwinn 220 Recumbent Exercise Bike

Schwinn Exercise Bike: Schwinn 220 Recumbent Exercise Bike

5-Star Review:

The price on this item was excellent, and it was purchased at a time when Amazon offered free shipping; making it a super bargain. We were able to see the same item at a local Sports Authority to test it out; it's a quality machine, and just the right size for our upstairs extra bedroom, while fitting in as another piece of furniture.

I had read reviews about having difficulty assembling these bikes, but had no trouble at all. I am over 65, but put it together in 1-1/2 leisurly hours. Liked the fact that it came in parts, since I unpacked it in the foyer, carrying upstairs in several trips. My (also over 65) wife is primarily "riding" this; likes the recumbent style, giving back support, while getting much needed exercise.

It does have some special "programs" that can be customized, but she just hits quick start; we really don't need anything too complicated-fits the bill perfectly. It's very quiet, and does not compete with her TV viewing. I did like the Schwinn name, although I found that they are now owned by Nautilus (also a good company name).

I called about the control panel, on their 800 number, and they were very helpful. This is the largest item that I've ever ordered online, but won't hesitate in the future, particularly from Amazon.com.

Schwinn Exercise Bike: Schwinn Active 20 Series Recumbent Exercise Bike

5-Star Review

I've had this bike for about 5 weeks now and am very pleased with my purchase. I just sit in front of the TV and play PS3 for about 1-2 hours every day and burn plenty of calories. The chair is much more comfortable than our old standard exercise bike, which is paramount when using it as much as we do.

We also looked at the more expensive, older Schwinn model. Personally, we liked this one better, and it's 200 bucks cheaper. This one was more comfortable and also much more easily adjusted, which is nice when you have 2 people using it at very different heights. This one hasn't been on the market as long, so I'm not sure how it'll last over the years, but so far it's been strong and sturdy. Still, we got a 3 year warranty (not from Amazon) just in case. Even with the warranty it's still much cheaper than the $[...] Schwinn model.

As for negatives, you can get a lot of resistance from this bike, but each step up is a big jump. It would have been nicer to be able to ramp up more gradually. Also, I believe the calorie burner count is too high. I have a hard time believing that I can burn almost 1000 calories in an hour (although I do get the resistance up pretty high and break a good sweat).

All told though, this is an excellent bike at an excellent price. Highly recommend.
